“In the Lord put I my trust…”

Those are the opening words of Psalm 11. Written thousands of years ago, they speak to us today. Do they ever.

Do we put our trust in anything or anyone before the Lord? Old, familiar leaders, or up-and-coming political rock stars; regular rock stars, movie stars, gurus of every shape and size; or Science (“We may not have all the answers yet, but you can bet we will—soon!”), or the stock market, or the UN, or this or that political party; or maybe in the basic goodness and good sense of mankind—have we put our trust in any of these? And how has it worked out for us?

Elsewhere in the Bible, the Lord Himself advises us, “Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?” (Isaiah 2:22) Why does God say this? Do you think the Lord was overly pessimistic about man’s capacity for good? Maybe God just didn’t anticipate how wise today’s leaders would be.

“For, lo, the wicked bend their bow…”

We don’t like to think there really are wicked people out there. I’m OK, you’re OK. But some of these characters are not OK, not by a long shot. If I listed all the prominent, influential people in this world who are definitely not OK, this column would be 3,000 pages long and Congress would pass it into law before they realized what they were doing. The wicked don’t use bows and arrows anymore, but their lust for feeding souls to the devil is as hot as ever.

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

It’s a matter of debate as to whether the foundations of our civilization are in the process of being destroyed, and might yet be saved, or else are already destroyed beyond repair. But it is not debatable that the foundations are a mess. Marriage, the family, individual liberty, truth, beauty—they’re all on their way out. We pay intellectuals a lot of money, and hold them in high esteem, for speaking against foundational virtues and working for their abolition. We choose liars, thieves, perverts, criminals, and swine to govern us. Yes, those foundations are in trouble.

“The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, His eyelids try the children of men.”

Oh, yes—He’s watching. The Lord is up to speed on current events, great and small.

“The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth. Upon the wicked He shall rain snares…”
